Keeping Your Client Out of the Loop Can Get You Out of a Job

I recently heard from a very young hip company that had hired a group to “handle” their social media for their new product. The social media company’s contract was up for renewal and they were days away from well being fired. This social media company told the client basically they did not know what they’re doing and leave it up to them because they will take care of it. Now when the client asked questions they almost repeated this sentiment and they did not take any of their questions seriously. In fact when the client asked questions about their new social media campaign and the social media group they hired was really annoyed repeating their mantra “You guys don’t know anything about this. Don’t worry we’ll take care of this.” Could you imagine having an architect remodeling your house or a doctor handling your treatment and just saying “You don’t know anything about this so don’t worry about it.”
Now look I get it. As a social media marketer the client usually doesn’t get it and we all have been faced with a surly executive that doesn’t believe in the value of social media. Some social media professionals cannot convey quickly or assertively why this is imperative to incorporate social media. For instance Twitter is the worlds new 1-800 customer service number where the sentiment about your latest customer experience is mini blogged for the world to see. Let your client know this.
Let your client in on what is measurable and what is not. An easy way is to print out an excel spreadsheet and show your client the latest sentiment analytical report. It’s easy to do. Check out socialmention and it is a easy way to start that conversation with a potential client or maintain good relations with a client. Keep the interest of the client. Break down what they need to know and what your current campaign hopes to bring. We all know its trial and error when reaching out to potential customers. Your enthusiasm and your conversation goes along way.
